Moving Locally: Address Change

September 2002

Introduction
While we hope this is our only address change during the AOS process, we doubt that is likely. Our previous correspondence from the INS says that it will be anywhere from 18 to 26 months before our AOS interview. At the time of this writing, it has just been a little over 12 months since they received our paperwork. We could hear from them in as little as 4 months, or over a year from today...

Who do I send this to? What do I send?
When we were trying to find out who exactly to send the address change to, we found at least 3 different addresses... Ultimately, we decided that the instructions on the receipt letter we received from the Chicago INS was the best thing to do. Our move was local, so we did not have to worry about getting our case files moved to a new office.

What we sent, and how

We decided to send the letter by certified mail with return receipt, even though we knew that it would take a little bit longer. We are concerned that there could be problems getting the address change associated with Dan's file, and hope that sending the letter this way will be added proof we carried our part of the burden.

Response
A couple of weeks later, we receive a letter - with Dan's name mispelled, mind you - acknowledging receipt of the address change. We are mildly nervous that the fact that the acknowledgement later calls Dan "Kaniel" instead of "Daniel" will cause problems in the future, but decide to leave it for the moment.

Update: The misspelling hasn't yet caused problems as such, but the INS (excuse me, BCIS) doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry to fix it, either. On March 20, we sent a letter requesting that they fix the misspelling. BCIS sent a response on March 26, 2003 acknowledging they'd received our letter (and spelling Dan's name correctly in the response) but said:

Please be advised that we are working on a response to that inquiry and recognize that due to the nature of the case, it may take some time to obtain the information requested. You will receive a response within ninety days from the date of this letter.

Spouse/Sponsors
We also decide that it is not necessary for Becky to update her affidavit of support address at this time. Dan's AOS interview has not yet happened, so she isn't "on file" anywhere as being a sponsor. Plus, we expect that we will have to redo the I-864 when the interview does come around.
